Beautiful Bayeux

Welcome to the charming French commune called Bayeux! This gorgeous town is full of views straight out of a storybook as well as an eleventh century cathedral. If you are looking for a quaint and picturesque area of France to visit, Bayeux is for you!

One of the main beauties of Bayeux is its 11th Century cathedral. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Bayeux was built in 1077, but not much of the original structure remains to this day. The cathedral is open most days for free visits unless there is a religious service in progress. A special treat to witness during the summer months when visiting Bayeux is the light show that occurs every Saturday night at the cathedral. This show begins at nightfall during July and August.

Although the town itself is small, there are so many interesting areas to explore! If you are looking to do some shopping, Bayeux has some adorable little shops around the cathedral as well as numerous places to grab a bite to eat. It is also one of the best places to stay if you are planning to visit the D-Day beaches in Normandy.

Just a little under an hour drive away from Bayeux you will find Utah Beach, Normandy, France. This is one of the more well-known beaches that was a part of the World War Two D-Day invasion. If you are interested in history or have a loved one who served in WWII, Utah Beach is a great addition to your trip. When visiting be sure to set aside a decent amount of time to walk through the D-Day museum located just along the beach. It is in incredibly interesting and solemn exhibit that describes the events the occurred leading up to, during, and after the invasion. You can also go inside one of the bunkers located in a field nearby that dates back to the war. Whether you knew someone who was a part of the invasion or not, it is a worthy stop and a beautiful memorial for those who fought.
